# Cognism vs *UpLead*

## Cognism

Best for notified, DNC-screened contact data Quote only

vs

## UpLead

One credit for the email and the mobile together $99/mo

Short answer

Pick UpLead if you want to know the bill before the call and your list is North American, and accept that the published plans do not carry the API. Pick Cognism if the list is European, if mobile coverage matters, or if somebody in your business will eventually ask where the contacts came from. Both end in a sales conversation, so run the trial on your own rows first and make the quote argue against a number you measured. The compliance posture is the only thing here that genuinely cannot be bought cheaper elsewhere.

Side by side

## Where they actually differ

Every value comes from the same record that drives the [Enrichment APIs](https://frontal.so/gtm-apis/enrichment-apis) listing, so this table cannot disagree with the cards. Accented tags are data one provider returns and the other does not.

The decision

## Pick each one when

### Cognism

- Your list is European and the coverage has to hold outside North America.
- Somebody will ask how the contacts were sourced, and a DPA is not the answer they want.
- You want mobile numbers screened against the Do Not Call registers before you dial.

### UpLead

- You want a published price on the pricing page rather than after a call.
- The list is North American and a single credit buying both email and mobile suits your motion.
- You are testing the data before committing, and a 7-day trial is enough to do it.

The test that settles it

Neither vendor publishes a match rate you could hold them to, so the rate card only tells you half the story. Take 500 rows from the segment you actually sell into, run them through a trial or entry plan from each side, verify both result sets, and divide spend by survivors. Half a day and about $20, and on a close pair it changes the answer often enough to be worth it.

Plan by plan

## What each one costs, tier by tier

Only one of these two publishes a rate card. UpLead lists its tiers, and Cognism quotes everything, so half of this comparison is a number you have to go and get. Every figure is read off the vendor's own pricing page, and the pages they came from are listed at the foot of this one.

| The short version | Cognism | UpLead |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cheapest paid plan | Not published | Essentials, $99 |
| Tiers published | None | 4 |
| Free tier | No free tier and no published price. Both plans include 5 seats. | 7-day free trial with 5 credits. No ongoing free tier. |
| Unit cost at entry | Not sold by the unit | $0.582 per contact |

The cheapest paid plan is rarely the plan you end up on, because what moves you up a tier is usually volume rather than a feature, and the two cards below say what each side publishes and what it keeps off the page.

### Cognism

Cognism publishes no price at all, so there is no rate card to put here. Everything is quoted, which means the number you get depends on what you ask for and on where in their quarter you ask it.

Get these in writing before you sign: the per-unit rate at your volume, the annual minimum, how many seats that price assumes, whether API access is included or an add-on. Without the first two you cannot compare this against anything else on this page.

### UpLead

UpLead publishes 4 tiers, one of them free, and the paid ladder runs from $99 to Quote.

#### Free trial

- Verified emails and mobile direct dials
- Chrome extension
- No ongoing free tier

Cost model

## What Cognism and UpLead cost at your volume

Put your own volume in. The model picks the cheapest published plan that covers it on each side, which is the question a rate card cannot answer and the one that decides the bill.

### Cognism

Publishes no price, so there is nothing here to model and the lines below say what to ask for.

Published price **None**

Monthly **Quoted**

Twelve months **Quoted**

Ask for **the per-unit rate at your volume and the annual minimum**

### UpLead

Priced on the volume you use, so the plan that covers a normal month is the one that decides the bill.

Plan that covers it **None with API access**

Monthly **Quoted**

Why **every published tier that carries the API is quote-only**

Ask for **the entry price on the tier that includes API access**

Plans are read from each vendor's own pricing page and the model picks the cheapest one that covers you, so these are list prices before any discount you negotiate and before annual billing, which most of these vendors discount. Cognism publishes no price, so nothing is modeled there and the panel says what to ask for instead.

In practice

## How this plays out once it is running

The published difference is transparency, and it goes to UpLead only up to a point. UpLead prints $99 for 170 credits and $199 for 400, which is $0.582 and $0.498 a contact, and then puts full API access on a Professional tier that is annual billing and quote only. [Cognism](https://frontal.so/gtm-apis/enrichment-apis/cognism-api-review) prints nothing at all: two plans, five seats each, no price anywhere. So the honest reading is that one of them shows you a rate card for a product you cannot buy programmatically, and the other shows you nothing.

The unpublished difference is what a credit buys. One UpLead credit unlocks a whole contact, the work email and the mobile direct dial together, which is unusually generous in a category that meters those separately. Cognism meters three ways at once, with search tokens counting the rows a query returns and credits counting the contacts you actually reveal, on top of a 500 request a minute ceiling per operation. Budget against the meter that stops you first, and on Cognism that is rarely the one anybody plans for.

Strengths

## What each one is genuinely good at

Not a feature list. These are the things that make somebody keep paying after the novelty has worn off, which is a different question from what the marketing page leads with.

### Cognism

#### The compliance posture is the product

Cognism notifies the business contacts it holds inside GDPR timeframes and screens its phone data against 15 Do Not Call and TPS registers. It carries ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and SOC 2 Type II. Nobody else in this comparison does more than sign a DPA, and that difference only ever matters in one direction: the day somebody outside your team asks.

#### Global coverage rather than North American coverage

Cognism is marked global in this directory and UpLead North American, and on an EU-heavy list that is the whole decision. A cheaper rate per contact on a database that does not hold your market is not cheaper per contact found, which is the only figure that decides anything.

#### It ships an MCP server, which the other side does not

Cognism publishes an MCP endpoint at mcp.cognism.com/mcp alongside the REST API, authenticated with OAuth 2.0 client credentials from M2M Connect in the platform settings. If the thing calling this is going to be an agent, that is a configuration line here and a build on the other side.

### UpLead

#### One credit is a whole contact, email and mobile together

Most vendors in this category charge separately for a direct dial, often several times the email rate. UpLead unlocks both for the same single credit, so a motion that needs the phone as well as the address is doing one lookup rather than two. That is what the $0.582 is actually buying, and against the per-operation pricing elsewhere it is less of an outlier than it first looks.

#### You can price a month before you talk to anybody

Essentials is $99 for 170 credits and Plus is $199 for 400, both on the pricing page. Cognism publishes no number at any tier, so the evaluation cost of finding out is itself part of what you are comparing. For a small team that needs a budget line before it needs a contract, that is the difference between a decision and a meeting.

#### A trial that does not need a conversation

Seven days and five credits, with no ongoing free tier afterwards. Five credits is not a match-rate test, but it is enough to see the shape of a record and confirm the fields you need are populated on your kind of company before anybody books anything.

Limits

## Where each one falls down

Every provider on this site has a case it handles badly, and the people who find out are the ones who bought it for that case. These are the ones worth knowing before you sign rather than after.

### Cognism

#### No published price at any tier, and five seats in the floor

Both Cognism plans include five seats whether or not five people will use them, and neither carries a number. A headless pipeline is buying a team license to get an API key, and you cannot find out what that costs without a sales process.

#### Three meters, and the binding one is not the obvious one

Search tokens meter the rows a query returns, credits meter the contacts you reveal, and requests are capped at 500 a minute per operation with a separate window each. Teams size against credits because credits are what the contract talks about, then hit the token ceiling on a broad search that returned far more than it revealed.

### UpLead

#### The published plans do not include the API

Full API access sits on Professional, which is annual billing and quote only. Essentials at $99 and Plus at $199 are the numbers on the page and neither of them is the product this directory is about, which makes UpLead the clearest case in the category of a visible price that is not the price you will pay.

#### North American coverage, and no rate limits published

UpLead is a North American database and says so, so an EU-heavy list belongs on the other side of this page. It also publishes no rate limits at all: credits are the binding constraint and throughput is whatever the account allows, which is a thing to establish before you design a backfill around it.

#### No MCP server and no ongoing free tier

There is no MCP endpoint, so an agent integration is REST and your own glue. And the trial is seven days, after which there is no free allowance to keep a staging environment alive on, which matters more than it sounds once the pipeline is built and somebody wants to test a change.

Both

## Using Cognism and UpLead together

A two-way comparison assumes the answer is one of them. On this pairing it often is not, and the arrangement below is what teams actually end up running.

Running both is a real arrangement here, and it is usually regional rather than redundant. UpLead on the North American rows where a single credit buys the email and the direct dial together, Cognism on everything in EMEA where its database is the one that holds your market. The routing rule is the country on the account record, and it is one branch in whatever is calling the APIs.

What makes that work rather than doubling your bill is that neither vendor charges you for a miss in a way that compounds. You are not running a waterfall through both, you are choosing one per row before the call goes out. That turns two expensive databases into one database with better coverage, at roughly the blended rate rather than the sum.

The exception is the compliance question, and it does not route. If the reason Cognism is on this page is that somebody needs to answer where the contacts came from, then the North American rows need that answer too, and running UpLead alongside reintroduces exactly the gap Cognism was bought to close. Decide whether the posture is a requirement or a preference before you design the split, because it changes the answer from both to one.

Decide

## Cognism or UpLead, for you

Five questions, answered from the same records as the rest of this page. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no result to email yourself.

Do you need to test on your own list before paying?

Will an agent be calling this?

Which market is most of your list in?

Do you need job postings?

Are you buying one step or the whole motion?

Answer the questions above

Each answer leans one way. The recommendation appears here once you have picked at least two.

A tool like this can only weigh what is on the page. It does not know your segment, and the one test that does is the bake-off further down: real rows, cheapest entry on each side, spend divided by survivors.

Where an answer leans on a certification or an integration, it means that vendor publishes it on the pages this directory read, which is not the same as the other one lacking it. The sources are listed at the foot of the page.

Provenance

## Where the data comes from, and what you may do with it

The question that arrives late and expensively is not how good the data is, it is who is allowed to hold it. These are the fields each one returns, the coverage it claims and the compliance it publishes.

| Provider | Fields returned | Coverage | Compliance | Redistribution |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Cognism](https://frontal.so/gtm-apis/enrichment-apis/cognism-api-review) | Work email, Mobile phone, Firmographics, Technographics, Intent and news, Job postings, Job changes | Global | ISO 27001 ISO 27701 SOC 2 Type II GDPR notified data | Not stated |
| [UpLead](https://www.uplead.com/) | Work email, Mobile phone, Firmographics, Technographics, Intent and news | Strongest in NA | GDPR DPA CCPA | Not stated |

None of these states a redistribution position on its pricing or docs pages. Internally that never matters. Put the rows in something your customers can see and it becomes the question your legal team asks first.

Two practical notes that apply to every provider on this page. A compliance badge describes the vendor, not your use of it, so a GDPR DPA does not give you a lawful basis for the outreach you send. And every one of these vendors runs its own opt-out, which means a person who asks you to delete their record has to be removed from your copy as well as from theirs.

Migration

## Moving between Cognism and UpLead

Most readers of this page are already on one of these two. A swap is four hours of code and a month of watching, and the order below is the one that catches the expensive mistakes while they are still free.

01

### Measure the thing you are about to lose

Run 500 rows you already have through Cognism and record the match rate, the fields that came back populated and the cost. Without that number a migration cannot be judged, because every provider looks cheaper per unit than the one you are paying for today.

02

### Check the fields, not the field count

UpLead does not return Job postings and Job changes, which Cognism does. If anything downstream reads job postings, that is a change to your pipeline and not just to your vendor.

03

### Rewrite the auth and the limits, in that order

Cognism authenticates with OAuth 2.0 client credentials, from M2M Connect in platform settings. UpLead uses API key, per the UpLead API docs.

The limits are the part that bites later. Cognism rate: 500 req/min per operation, separate windows. Plus search tokens and credits.

UpLead rate: Not published. Credits are the binding constraint. A loop tuned to the first will either crawl or get throttled on the second.

04

### Run both for one billing cycle

Keep the old key live and route a slice of real traffic to the new one. A month is the shortest honest test, because credit expiry, rollover and the overage rate only show up at renewal and those are where the surprises live.

05

### Cancel on the renewal date, not before

Credits on most of these plans do not survive a downgrade. Check what happens to the balance you have already paid for, and time the switch so you are not buying the same records twice.

The step people skip is the first one, and it is the only one that cannot be done after the fact. Once the old key is off you have nothing to compare the new match rate against, so a provider that is quietly worse on your segment looks like a provider that is fine.

What practitioners say

## What practitioners say about Cognism

The one part of this page that is not a vendor claim. Quotes are transcribed as written, linked to the thread, and nothing here is the only source for a figure in the tables above.

### The regional split is the real difference, and practitioners buy both

> Each data tool only really excels at one or two things. ZI is solid for NA mid-market and enterprise, while Cognism crushes it in EMEA and cell numbers. Every time I need one, we run a trial. If you've got the budget, use 2-3 tools to cover more ground. Right now, I'm using Clay for data infrastructure, Cognism for EMEA, and ZoomInfo for the US. sometimes Cognism finds data that ZI can't-and vice versa.

The comparison pages here reach the same place from the rate cards rather than from experience: Cognism sells notified EMEA data and mobile coverage, ZoomInfo sells North American breadth, and neither of them publishes a price. This is somebody running both with Clay in front, which is the arrangement those verdicts describe rather than the either-or the question usually assumes.

Coverage is the one thing nobody in this category will put a number behind, so "crushes it in EMEA" is an experienced opinion and not a measurement. The thread it sits in is itself a request for accuracy benchmarks that do not exist, which is a fair summary of the evidence available on either vendor.

14 threads read on 13 October 2026, searched by vendor name. Scores and dates are the comment's own. Nothing here is the only source for a price or a limit on this site: every figure in the tables above comes from a vendor's own page.

FAQ

## Cognism and UpLead, answered

Read from the same records that drive the table above.

**Is Cognism or UpLead cheaper?**

Cognism does not publish a price at any tier, so the two cannot be compared on cost. UpLead starts at $99/mo, which is as far as the comparison goes.

**Can I try Cognism and UpLead for free?**

Cognism: No free tier and no published price. Both plans include 5 seats. UpLead: 7-day free trial with 5 credits. No ongoing free tier.

**What are the rate limits on Cognism and UpLead?**

Cognism: 500 req/min per operation, separate windows. Plus search tokens and credits. UpLead: Not published. Credits are the binding constraint.

**Do Cognism and UpLead both have MCP servers?**

One of them. Cognism ships one (https://mcp.cognism.com/mcp); UpLead documents none.

**Which is better, Cognism or UpLead?**

Pick UpLead if you want to know the bill before the call and your list is North American, and accept that the published plans do not carry the API. Pick Cognism if the list is European, if mobile coverage matters, or if somebody in your business will eventually ask where the contacts came from.

**What are the downsides of Cognism and UpLead?**

Measured against each other rather than in general. Cognism: there is no free tier, so you cannot measure your own match rate before paying; nothing is priced publicly, so every comparison starts with a sales call. UpLead: there is no free tier, only a trial, so test your own list inside its limits before paying; there is no documented MCP server, so an agent has to go through your own code.

**Can you use Cognism and UpLead together?**

Running both is a real arrangement here, and it is usually regional rather than redundant. UpLead on the North American rows where a single credit buys the email and the direct dial together, Cognism on everything in EMEA where its database is the one that holds your market.

**Can I migrate from Cognism to UpLead without losing data?**

Not without losing a field. UpLead does not return job postings and job changes, which Cognism does, so anything downstream that reads it has to change. Either way, measure your match rate on 500 rows before you switch, because that number is the one you cannot recover afterwards.
